Triple-template system for phosphorus-modified AFX/CHA intergrowth zeolite

Phosphorus-modified zeolite with an intergrowth structure of AFX and CHA (P-AFX/CHA) was synthesized by a triple-template system. The synthesis system involved two nitrogen-containing organic structure directing agents (N-OSDAs, N,N,N-trimethyl-1-adamantammonium hydroxide and 1,1′ -(1,4-butanediyebis(Dazonia-4-azabicyclo [2,2,2]octane) dibromide) for developing the intergrowth zeolite phase. Tetraethylphosphonium cation (TEP) was also added as a phosphorus-modifying agent. The calcination treatment causes the decomposition and oxidation of TEP to form a phosphorus oxide species that interacts with the zeolite framework, thereby realizing direct-phosphorus modification in the zeolite cavity. We optimized the synthesis condition of P-AFX/CHA, tuning the synthesis gel composition and selecting the counter anion in TEP, and found that tetraethylphosphonium bromide (TEPBr) is useful for effectively incorporating phosphorus into the intergrowth zeolite. P-31 magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR confirmed the phosphorus modification via the decomposition of P-OSDA, whereas X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed the intergrowth structure. In addition, C-13 dipolar decoupling (DD) MAS NMR, elemental analysis, and other synthesis results suggested the selective modification of phosphorus into the CHA phase in the intergrowth zeolite. Phosphorus modification was effective in improving the thermal stability of P-AFX/CHA. The thermal stability increased with increasing the phosphorus modification degree.

Separation of tungsten and molybdenum using selective precipitation with manganese sulfate assisted by cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)

In this paper, the separation of tungsten and molybdenum by selective precipitation is evaluated, and the addition of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), as complex agent, is developed to reduce Mo loss. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations show that manganese salt has selectivity to precipitate tungsten from molybdenum. Through single factor experiments, the influence of precipitation factors is studied systematically. The results show that CTAB can enhance the separation of molybdenum and tungsten by manganese salts. Under optimal conditions (temperature 50 degrees C, n(Mo)/n(CTAB) = 2, n(Mo)/n(W) = 10, time 1 h), the loss rate of Mo is 0.73%, the precipitation rate of W is 89.57%, and the separation factor is 2411.67, which is much higher than the separation factor of molybdenum and tungsten without CTAB. The results of XRD and SEM show that the precipitates mainly consist of MnWO4 and a small amount of MnMoO4 with the shape of the flower cluster composed of flakes. The complex effect of CTAB is verified by the simulation of Cambridge sequential total energy package (CASTEP). The results of geometric optimization, total energy and density of states together with FTIR spectra reveal the complex mechanism of CTAB with MoO42-. As an inexpensive and green sorbent, CTAB can be used to enhance the effect of manganese salt precipitation method for selective separation of W and Mo ions.

Design and thermo-economic comparisons of large scale solar absorption air conditioning cycles

Sustainable cooling absorption technologies, using renewable energy sources, and climate-friendly cooling liquids gain more and more attention. In this work, design and thermoeconomic analyses are presented to compare between two different collector types (parabolic trough and evacuated tube) by Water-Lithium Bromide absorption systems. Generally, the main component of the entire system is the absorption refrigeration chiller, the plant will then consist of three subsystems. The first subsystem is the solar system for thermal power conversion. The second subsystem is represented by the condenser and chiller absorber that need to be cooled, using a cooling tower. The third subsystem is represented by the cold circuit and the terminals of the useful cooling power produced. A case study for a sports arena with 700-800 kW total cooling load is also presented. Results reveal that parabolic trough collector combined with H2O-LiBr (PTC/H2O-LiBr) gives lower design aspects and minimum rates of hourly costs (5.2$/h), while ETC/H2O-LiBr configuration (5.6$/h). H2O LiBr thermo-economic product cost is (0.14$/GJ). The cycle coefficient of performance COP was in the range of 0.5-0.9.

Alloy CsCdxPb1-xBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals: The Role of Surface Passivation in Preserving Composition and Blue Emission

Various strategies have been proposed to engineer the band gap of metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) while preserving their structure and composition and thus ensuring spectral stability of the emission color. An aspect that has only been marginally investigated is how the type of surface passivation influences the structural/color stability of AMX(3) perovskite NCs composed of two different M2+ cations. Here, we report the synthesis of blue-emitting Cs-oleate capped CsCdxPb1-xBr3 NCs, which exhibit a cubic perovskite phase containing Cd-rich domains of Ruddlesden-Popper phases (RP phases). The RP domains spontaneously transform into pure orthorhombic perovskite ones upon NC aging, and the emission color of the NCs shifts from blue to green over days. On the other hand, postsynthesis ligand exchange with various Cs-carboxylate or ammonium bromide salts, right after NC synthesis, provides monocrystalline NCs with cubic phase, highlighting the metastability of RP domains. When NCs are treated with Cs-carboxylates (including Cs-oleate), most of the Cd2+ ions are expelled from NCs upon aging, and the NCs phase evolves from cubic to orthorhombic and their emission color changes from blue to green. Instead, when NCs are coated with ammonium bromides, the loss of Cd2+ ions is suppressed and the NCs tend to retain their blue emission (both in colloidal dispersions and in electroluminescent devices), as well as their cubic phase, over time. The improved compositional and structural stability in the latter cases is ascribed to the saturation of surface vacancies, which may act as channels for the expulsion of Cd2+ ions from NCs.

Corrosion resistance of alpha- and (alpha plus beta)-Brasses in a descaling solution by a mixture of imidazole and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide

Scaling is a major problem in many industrial processes. Oxide scales often formed on the surface of metals and alloys, and it is of high interest to descale it using effective and environment-friendly methods. Herein, the corrosion inhibition effect of the imidazole (IMI) mixed with the Hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) for alpha- and (alpha + beta)-brasses in a descaling solution (sulfamic (2%) and perchloric (4%) mixture) is studied at 295 K using electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization measurements (PDP) and electrochemical impedance measurements (EIS)), inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICPS) and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) techniques. Results show that the imidazole/CTAB mixture acts via adsorption at the alloy/solution interface. Potentiodynamic polarization results reveal that the imidazole/CTAB mixture behaves as a mixed type corrosion inhibitor. At the same time, those from EIS tests show that alpha-brass has a higher corrosion resistance compared to that of (alpha + beta)-brass. Under optimum conditions, an inhibition efficiency of 95 % is achieved for both brasses. The morphological characterization by SEM/EDX and ICPS analysis confirms the efficacy of the mixture in protecting alpha- and (alpha + beta)-brasses against corrosion by decreasing the dezincification factor. This study provides a new approach to control the brass loss and achieve desired surface quality using a less corrosive descaling solution and imidazole/CTAB as anti-corrosive additive.

Critical Role of Ion Exchange Conditions on the Properties of Network Ionic Polymers

Ionic polymers are important in a wide range of applications and can exhibit widely different properties depending on the ionic species. In the case of single ion conducting polymers, where one charge is attached to the backbone or as a side group, ion exchange is performed to control the mobile species. While the conditions are often specified, the final ion content is not always quantified, and there are no dear criteria for what concentration of salt is needed in the exchange. A series of ammonium network ionic polymers with different precise carbon spacers (C4-C7) between ionic junctions were synthesized as model systems to understand how the ion exchange conditions impact the resultant polymer properties. The initial networks with free bromide anions were exchanged with 1.5, 3, or 10 equiv of lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) salt in solution. For networks with seven carbons between cross-links, increasing the LiTFSI concentration led to an increase in ion exchange efficiency from 83.6 to 97.6 mol %. At the highest conversion, the C7 network showed a 4 degrees C decrease in glass transition temperature (T-g), a SO degrees C increase in degradation temperature, 12-fold lower water uptake from air, and a greater than 10-fold increase in conductivity at 90 degrees C. These results illustrate that properties such as T-g are less sensitive to residual ion impurities, whereas the conductivity is highly dependent on the final exchange conversion.

Evaluation of Anticancer Activity and Apoptosis inducing ability of Suaeda monoica on Breast Cancer Cell Line

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women but rarely found in men. It is an invasive tumor majorly formed in lobules or ducts of the breast. The present study investigates the anticancer activity of Suaeda monoica with different solvent extracts against estrogen receptor-positive MCF-7 using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (M) assay. The different solvents used for this study were ethanol, methanol, acetone and diethyl ether. The diethyl ether extract of the plant showed the highest anticancer activity with an IC50 value of 186.78 mu g/ml in comparison with other solvent extracts. The morphological changes were then observed under an inverted phase-contrast microscope. Fluorescence imaging using propidium iodide stain was done to confirm the changes associated with apoptosis. The study shows that the plant has appreciable anticancer activity against the MCF-7 cell line and further the bioactive compound responsible for the anticancer activity should be isolated and purified.
