Advanced experimental investigation of double hydrated salts and their composite for improved cycling stability and metal compatibility for long-term heat storage technologies

Thermochemical heat storage (TCHS) systems offer promising solutions to the global energy problem by storing energy produced by renewable sources in a very veritable manner. In this context, the structural and thermal energy storage performance of Ammonium Tutton salts NH4T-M (M = Zn, Mg, Cu, Ni, Fe) were investigated as thermochemical heat storage materials (TCM). The thermal measurements of these materials revealed suitable operating conditions with a good storage density for low to mid-temperature applications. The compatibility test provided severe corrosion behavior of Cu/NH4T-Cu and Cu/NH4T-Fe due to the strong pitting corrosion damages confirmed by SEM microscopy and the corrosion products were revealed by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. The obtained results showed that NH4T-Zn was qualified as the prospective candidate for TCHS with the highest storage density of 1214.6 kJ/kg and less corrosive behavior. Meanwhile, the cycling stability showed a significant storage density decrease of 24.2% after 20 cycles. A novel composite TCM was developed based on NH4T-Zn impregnated into expanded graphite (EG). NH4T-Zn@EG provided a high storage density of 1080.6 kJ/kg inducing an enhancement of 68.7% compared to the unimpregnated salt with high cycling stability. Organic geochemistry of kerogen from La Luna Formation, Western Venezuelan Basin, using diffuse reflectance – Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRFTIR)

Twelve samples of marine type II kerogen from La Luna Formation (Maracaibo sub-Basin, Western Venezuelan Basin) have been characterized via diffuse reflectance – Fourier-transform – infrared spectroscopy (DRFTIR). The samples were selected from different regions in the sub-Basin and correspond to different maturity levels with subtle variations in organic facies. For the analysis, the kerogen samples were mixed with potassium bromide (KBr) at a 5% w/w concentration. Spectra were obtained using a Varian 640-IR spectrometer operating in Fourier Transform mode and coupled with an EasiDiff diffuse reflectance accessory. Each spectrum was generated within the 400-4000 cm(-1) frequency interval, at 4 cm(-1) resolution, after 52 scans. IR parameters known to distinguish organic facies, such as the A factor and the C factor, separated the kerogen from anoxic environment (samples from the Maraca Creek) versus the kerogen from suboxic/disoxic conditions (samples from La Molina and San Antonio). Organic facies indices by Chen a al. (1998) showed to be influenced by maturity effects. Higher thermal maturity of samples from La Molina creek was supported by increasing aromaticity (indices by Lis a al., 2005), as well as decreasing aliphaticity as expressed by a new parameter termed here in as A(II). Therefore, thorough thermodynamic measurements were conducted for three alkyl phosphonate based ionic liquids and their aqueous binary systems. Experimental measurements of vapour-liquid equilibrium, heat capacity, density and excess enthalpy were measured and successfully represented using NRTL model and adequate equations. Thermal performances of single stage absorption heat transformer were numerically simulated. The influence of the temperature sources and sinks was studied. The best coefficient of performance was obtained with mixtures of water and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methylphosphonate. The typical coefficient of performance values for this mixture is found to be between 0.40 and 0.45 depending on the temperature conditions. This value is 10% lower than that observed with the classically used {water + lithium bromide} mixture. Nevertheless, {water + ionic liquid} mixture has a wider operating temperature range than conventional working pairs. Quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the levels of ZEB2-AS1, miR-142-3p and inositol polyphosphate-4-phosphatase type II B (INPP4B). The cell viability and apoptosis were examined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and flow cytometry, respectively. Western blotting was applied to analyze levels of BCL2 apoptosis regulator (Bcl-2), BCL2 associated X, apoptosis regulator (Bax), cleaved-caspase-3 and INPP4B. The interaction among ZEB2-AS1, miR-142-3p and INPP4B was verified by dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA pull-down assay. Using empirical dynamic modeling to assess relationships between atmospheric trace gases and eukaryotic phytoplankton populations in coastal Southern California

Many different atmospheric trace gases have been directly and indirectly linked to biological sources and sinks. Here we assess how atmospheric mixing ratios of a range of halocarbons (CH3Br, CH2Br2, CHBr3, CH3Cl, CHCl3, and CH3I) and COS are causally connected to naturally occurring marine eukaryotic phytoplankton in coastal Southern California. We use a self-organizing map to characterize the abiotic environment and empirical dynamic modeling with convergent cross mapping to identify causal interactions between multiple in situ 8-year time-series, sampled at the Ellen Browning Scripps Pier at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Our work supports previous findings that halocarbon production is found in a variety of marine phytoplankton taxa and suggests that local phytoplankton may have the ability to affect changes in the mixing ratios of halocarbons in nearshore environments. There were notable links between changes in CH3I and several different diatom taxa and between changes in CHCl3 and a group of phytoplankton during specific ecosystem states. Our results suggest that both seasonal and non-seasonal shifts in eukaryotic phytoplankton structure contribute to small fluctuations in atmospheric halocarbon mixing ratios that exhibit strong seasonality and may occasionally play a larger role in atmospheric mixing ratios of halocarbons that display reduced seasonality.
