Comparative analysis of antifungal, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of mycosynthesized silver nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles

This study aimed to compare the antifungal, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of Aspergillus terreus mediated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with that of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). AgNPs were spherical in shape with a size of 8-20 nm; whereas, AuNPs showed anisotropic morphology (10-50 nm). Interestingly, AgNPs showed excellent antifungal activity against all the plant pathogens tested; while, AuNPs did not show any inhibition. However, both these nanoparticles showed good antioxidant activities. Among six different cancer cell lines tested, AgNPs showed comparatively significant cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells with an IC50 value of 2.90 mu g/mL; whereas, AuNPs showed the maximum activity against HepG2 cells (IC50: 25.79 mu g/mL). Acridine orange-ethidium bromide (AO-EB) dual staining and nucleic acid staining (DAPI) confirmed the apoptotic phenomenon induced by nanoparticles, which was further confirmed by cell cycle analysis. Antioxidant, Anticancer Activity and Phytochemical Analysis of Green Algae, Chaetomorpha Collected from the Arabian Gulf

Seaweeds are a group of marine multicellular algae; the presence of antioxidant phytochemical constituents in Seaweed Chaetomorpha sp. extracts has received attention for their role in the prevention of human diseases. This study explores the phytochemical constituents, antioxidant, and anticancer properties of the Cladophoraceae, Chaetomorpha sp. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were performed to study the chemical structure and chemical formula. Different concentrations of ethanol and aqueous extracts of Chaetomorpha were used to estimate antioxidant activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and total flavonoid, phenolic, and tannins content assays. Anti-tumor activity against breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) was assessed by 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-cyl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide (MTT) assay. The EDX analysis indicated the presence of oxygen, silicon, and calcium as dominant elements. Antioxidant assays indicated that the ethanol extracts of Chaetomorpha consisted of a total of 189.14 +/- 0.99 mg QE/g flavonoid content, 21.92 +/- 0.43 mg GAE/g phenolic content and 21.81 +/- 0.04 mg GAE/g tannins content. The DPPH radical scavenging assay exhibited higher antioxidant activity IC50 (9.41 +/- 0.54 mg/mL) in the ethanol extract. Moreover, it showed high anticancer activity by growth inhibition in the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line and low IC50 (225.18 +/- 0.61 mu g/mL). GC/MS analysis revealed the presence of Dichloracetic acid (DCA) as the active antitumor constituent of Chaetomorpha sp.; other anticancer compounds identified were Oximes and L-alpha-Terpinol. The results revealed that the type of Chaetomorpha sp. studied here possesses very unique and novel constituents and active potent antitumor chemical constituents and it can act as a promising antioxidant and anticancer agent for future applications in pharmaceutical industries.

Electrodeposition of Nickel/Graphene Oxide Particle Composite Coatings: Effect of Surfactants on Graphene Oxide Dispersion and Coating Performance

The dispersibility of graphene oxide particles (GOs) in nickel electrolytes is critical for its uniform incorporation in the nickel matrix during the electrodeposition process. In this study, we study the fundamental interaction of surfactants and nickel ionic strength for uniform and stable incorporation of GOs in nickel electrolytes and their effect on coating performance. The results indicate that the non-ionic surfactant Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has the optimal dispersibility of GOs in nickel electrolyte, followed by the cationic surfactant Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and the anionic surfactant Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). It is also noted that the increasing nickel ionic strength would deteriorate the stability of GOs, attributing to the generation of cross-linking of high strength divalent nickel ions with dispersed graphene oxide. The electrodeposited coatings show that more incorporation of graphene oxide in the coating is achieved when the PEG surfactant is used, which leads to an increased hardness by 146% and a decreased friction coefficient by 72.7% under low nickel sulfamate concentration (200 g l(-1)), compared to pure nickel coating. Eventually, the study shows that higher nickel ionic strength would deteriorate the performance of the coatings, while the selection of proper surfactant can compensate for it.

Carbon Nanotubes Incorporated Z-Scheme Assembly of AgBr/TiO2 for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production under Visible Light Irradiations

Photocatalytic H-2 production is a promising strategy toward green energy and alternative to carbon-based fuels which are the root cause of global warming and pollution. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) incorporated Z-scheme assembly of AgBr/TiO2 was developed for photocatalytic H-2 production under visible light irradiations. Synthesized photocatalysts were characterized through transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), photoluminescence spectra (PL), Brunauer Emmet-Teller(BET), and UV-vis spectroscopy analysis techniques. The composite photocatalysts exhibited a H-2 production of 477 ppm which was three-folds higher than that produced by TiO2. The good performance was attributed to the strong interaction of three components and the reduced charge recombination, which was 89 and 56.3 times lower than the TiO2 and AgBr/TiO2. Furthermore, the role of surface acidic and basic groups was assessed and the photocatalytic results demonstrated the importance of surface functional groups. In addition, the composites exhibited stability and reusability for five consecutive cycles of reaction. Thus, improved performance of the photocatalyst was credited to the CNTs as an electron mediator, surface functional groups, higher surface area, enhanced charge separation and extended visible light absorption edge. This work provides new development of Z-scheme photocatalysts for sustainable H-2 production.

Micro-solvation and counter ion effects on ionic reactions: Activation of potassium fluoride with 18-crown-6 and tert-butanol in aprotic solvents

Ionic reactions have an important solvent effect and the first solvation shell makes the most important contribution for determining the reactivity. In the case of nucleophilic fluorination with potassium fluoride, the solubilization of the salt is another aspect which needs be considered. In the present work, the effect of adding stoichiometric quantity of 18-crown-6 and the bulky alcohol tert-butanol to the reaction of potassium fluoride with alkyl bromide in toluene and acetonitrile solvents was investigated by theoretical methods as molecular dynamics and electronic structure calculations, as well as by experiments. The calculations indicate that the fluoride ion in the IT (18-crown-6) complex interacts with tern-butanol molecules forming aggregates with one (acetonitrite solvent) and three (toluene solvent) tert-butanol molecules. The calculations predict that formation of these aggregates increase the solubilization of KF and produces and important rate acceleration effect in both acetonitrile and toluene solvents, which is experimentally observed. In the concentration around 0.75 mol L-1 of the tert-butanol, the reaction rate is proportional to the alcohol concentration and the rate of alkyl halide decay becomes 10 times higher than the rate without this alcohol. The present results point out that both the interactions of KF with crown ether and tert-butanol molecules have a synergic effect, increasing its reactivity towards S(N)2 reactions. Effects of intradermal needle therapy plus pinaverium bromide on gastrointestinal hormone levels in irritable bowel syndrome-diarrhea patients

Objective To observe the clinical efficacy difference in treating irritable bowel syndrome-diarrhea (IBS-D) of liver-qi stagnation and spleen-deficiency pattern with different treatment protocols, and the effects on serum levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), substance P (SP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), for unveiling the mechanism of intradermal needle therapy plus pinaverium bromide in treating IBS-D. Methods A total of 123 IBS-D patients were divided into an observation group, a Western medication group and an integrated Western and Chinese medication group using the random number table method, with 41 cases in each group. The Western medication group was given oral pinaverium bromide, 50 mg each time and 3 times a day. The integrated Western and Chinese medication group was given additional Chinese herbal medicine Tong Xie Yao Fang, one dose each day. The observation group was given additional intradermal needle therapy on the basis of the Western medication group. The whole intervention lasted for 6 weeks. Before and after treatment, the scores of gastrointestinal symptoms, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptom severity scale (IBS-SSS) and IBS quality of life (IBS-QOL) questionnaire, as well as the serum levels of 5-HT, SP and VIP were observed. The clinical efficacy was estimated. Results The total effective rate was 92.7% in the observation group, 68.3% in the Western medication group and 78.1% in the integrated Western and Chinese medication group. The total effective rate was higher in the observation group than in the other two groups, and higher in the integrated Western and Chinese medication group than in the Western medication group, showing statistical significance (all P<0.05). After treatment, the scores of gastrointestinal symptoms, TCM symptoms and IBS-SSS showed significant decreases in the three groups, presenting statistical significance compared with the baseline (all P<0.05); the scores of gastrointestinal symptoms, TCM symptoms and IBS-SSS were notably lower in the observation group than in the other two groups (all P<0.05), and lower in the integrated Western and Chinese medication group than in the Western medication group (all P<0.05). After treatment, the eight component scores of IBS-QOL showed significant increases in the three groups compared with the baseline (all P<0.05); the eight component scores in IBS-QOL were significantly higher in the observation group than in the other two groups (all P<0.05), and higher in the integrated Western and Chinese medication group than in the Western medication group (all P<0.05). After treatment, the serum levels of 5-HT, SP and VIP decreased markedly in the three groups compared with the baseline (all P<0.05); the serum levels of 5-HT, SP and VIP were significantly lower in the observation group than in the other two groups (all P<0.05), and lower in the integrated Western and Chinese medication group than in the Western medication group (P<0.05). Conclusion Treatment with intradermal needle therapy plus pinaverium bromide results in significant improvements in the gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life in patients with IBS-D of liver-qi stagnation and spleen deficiency pattern, and effectively regulates the gastrointestinal hormone production. A flexible silica aerogel with good thermal and acoustic insulation prepared via water solvent system

In this paper, transparent flexible hydrophobic silica aerogels were prepared by replacing the traditional alcohol solvent with water, using methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), via acid-base two steps method and CO2 supercritical drying. The role of surfactant CTAB in the gel-sol process was revealed, and the effect of CTAB concentration on the gel structure was analyzed. With the concentration increasing, the skeleton structure of the gel gradually changed from coarse graininess to continuous fiber. The obtained aerogels showed good elastic properties. With the increasing of density, the elastic modulus of aerogels gradually increased, so that the length could be restored to 63% of the original length after 50% compression strain. Aerogels also had low thermal conductivity and good thermal stability. The thermal conductivity at room temperature was only 0.0215 W/(m center dot K) and the initial decomposition temperature was up to 511 degrees C. For the aerogel with thickness of 11.8 mm and density of 60 mg/cm(3), it showed good sound absorption and sound insulation properties. When the sound frequency was 2000 Hz, the sound absorption coefficient was 0.91, and the sound transmission loss between 500 and 1600 Hz was 13-21 dB. This work provides a facile approach to fabricate lightweight and flexible silica aerogels for thermal and acoustic insulation applications.

Ruddlesden-Popper-Phase Hybrid Halide Perovskite/Small-Molecule Organic Blend Memory Transistors

Controlling the morphology of metal halide perovskite layers during processing is critical for the manufacturing of optoelectronics. Here, a strategy to control the microstructure of solution-processed layered Ruddlesden-Popper-phase perovskite films based on phenethylammonium lead bromide ((PEA)(2)PbBr4) is reported. The method relies on the addition of the organic semiconductor 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene (C-8-BTBT) into the perovskite formulation, where it facilitates the formation of large, near-single-crystalline-quality platelet-like (PEA)(2)PbBr4 domains overlaid by a approximate to 5-nm-thin C-8-BTBT layer. Transistors with (PEA)(2)PbBr4/C-8-BTBT channels exhibit an unexpectedly large hysteresis window between forward and return bias sweeps. Material and device analysis combined with theoretical calculations suggest that the C-8-BTBT-rich phase acts as the hole-transporting channel, while the quantum wells in (PEA)(2)PbBr4 act as the charge storage element where carriers from the channel are injected, stored, or extracted via tunneling. A pore-scale study on improving CTAB foam stability in heavy crude oil-water system using TiO2 nanoparticles

The main challenge of foam injection for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is foam stability at harsh reservoir conditions. With regard to this matter, this research aims to investigate the effect of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) in improving the stability of foam bubbles in porous media. The conductivity of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) solutions was measured to determine critical micelle concentration (CMC). Thereafter, TiO2 NPs were added into the foam solution and pH, contact angle, and interfacial tension (IFT) in the presence and absence of CTAB were measured. The stability of foam bubbles was evaluated through bulk foam tests and absorbance measurements. Finally, different nanofluids (at the concentrations of 0.00, 0.01, 0.03, 0.06, and 0.10 wt%), nano-CTAB solutions (at the concentrations of 0.00, 0.01, 0.03, 0.06, and 0.1 wt% NPs at the CMC of CTAB) and foams (at the concentrations of 0.00, 0.01, 0.03, 0.06, and 0.1 wt% NPs and at the CMC of CTAB) were injected into a heavy oil saturated heterogeneous porous medium. The results of the conductivity measurements showed that the highest adsorption of CTAB molecules onto the NPs surfaces occurs at 0.03 wt% NPs and 0.03 wt% CTAB. The results of micro- and macroscopic images from bulk foam tests revealed improved foam stability for this nano-CTAB foam. Moreover, contact angle and IFT results showed further improvement in interfacial properties for the mixture of NPs and CTAB solutions. Ultimately, in terms of oil recovery, the highest oil recovery factor (54%) was observed upon injection of foam with 0.03 wt% TiO2 NPs and 0.03 wt% CTAB, compared to the 22% recovery factor of DW injection. The visualization experiments showed that 32% enhancement in the recovery factor was mainly due to oil production from dead-end pores. This was because of different functions of NPs including stabilization of foam bubbles, wettability alteration, and improved foam generation mechanisms.
