Enhancing the Efficiency and Stability of Triple-Cation Perovskite Solar Cells by Eliminating Excess PbI2 from the Perovskite/Hole Transport Layer Interface

Metal halide perovskites are promising contenders for next-generation photovoltaic applications due to their remarkable photovoltaic efficiency and their compatibility with solution-processed fabrication. Among the various strategies to control the crystallinity and the morphology of the perovskite active layer and its interfaces with the transport layers, fabrication of perovskite solar cells from precursor solutions with a slight excess of PbI2 has become very common. Despite this, the role of such excess PbI2 is still rather controversial, lacking consensus on its effect on the bulk and interface properties of the perovskite layer. In this work, we investigate the effect of removing the excess PbI2 from the surface of a triple-cation mixed-halide Cs-0.05 (FA(0.83)MA(0.17))(0.95)Pb(I0.83Br0.17)(3) perovskite layer by four different organic salts on their photovoltaic performance and stability. We show that treatments with iodide salts such as methylammonium iodide (MAI) and formamidinium iodide (FM) can lead to the strongest beneficial effects on solar cell efficiency, charge recombination suppression, and stability while non-iodide salts such as methylammonium bromide (MABr) and methylammonium chloride (MACI) can also provide improvement in terms of charge recombination suppression and stability to a moderate extent in comparison to the untreated sample. Under optimized conditions and continuous solar illumination, the MAI- and FM-treated devices maintained 81 and 86% of their initial power conversion efficiency (PCEs), respectively, after 100 h of continuous illumination (versus 64% for the untreated solar cell with excess PbI2). Our study demonstrates that eliminating excess PbI2 at the perovskite/hole transport layer (HTL) interface by treating the perovskite surface with organic salts is a simple and efficient route to enhance the efficiency, and in particular the stability of perovskite solar cells.

Optimization of anionic conductivity through the coexistence of ionomer cluster and backbone-backbone morphologies in anion exchange membranes

Random copolymers of poly(4-vinylpyridine) and polyisoprene were synthesized, and subsequently quaternized with 1-alkylbromides. Conductivity of the samples characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed bromide conductivity as high as 110 mS/cm when n = 3 at 95% RH and 90 degrees C.

The effect of lithium bromide on the performance of ammonia-water absorption-resorption heat pump system

Ammonia absorption-resorption heat pump (ARHP) has lower operating pressure than the absorption heat pump, and it can also make full use of low-grade heat in the heating process. But the low coefficient of performance (COP) limits the applications of ammonia ARHP. Lithium bromide, as the third working medium, is added to the traditional ammonia-water working pair to improve the performance of the system. In this paper, COPs of NH3-H2O-LiBr ternary working fluid ARHP systems under different operating temperatures are studied by a simulation model established in Aspen Plus. The operating temperature parameters ranges of the ternary ARHP are compared with those of the binary ARHP. The simulation results indicate that the COP of the ternary system is greatly influenced by the concentration of lithium bromide, and it improves up to 21% at T-Gen = 100 degrees C, T-Des = T-Abs = T-Res = 40 degrees C, and P-H/P-L, = 1.5/0.48 MPa. Besides, when lithium bromide is added to the binary ARHP, the minimum values of (TGen) and T-Res are reduced to 87 degrees C and 3 degrees C, respectively. In contrast, the maximum values of T-Abs and T-Res are increased to 47.5 degrees C compared with the binary system. The NH3-H2O-LiBr ternary working fluid makes the low-grade heat reused by the ARHP more efficiently.

Optimization of HS-SPME and MRM conditions was based on a central composite design approach. The final OFD-HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS method yielded limits of quantitation below the sensory thresholds of 4MMP, 3MH, and 3MHA. Method validation and application on beers brewed with German, Australian, and US hops, as well as with added fruits displayed excellent method performance.

Synthesis and cytocompatibility analysis of carbon nanodots derived from palmyra palm leaf for multicolor imaging applications

A humble and environmental benign preparation of carbon nanodots (CDs) utilizing palmyra leaves as a sustainable precursor, by hydrothermal method, is reported. The morphology, structure, optical and thermal behavior of CDs was investigated using transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The fluorescent CDs have a spherical shape and size of around 5-10 nm. The TEM images suggest that crystallinity of the carbon nanodots with a lattice parameter of 0.238 nm, corresponding to the (100) diffraction facets of graphite. The synthesized CDs biocompatibility was assessed using the cell viability assay and acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) dual staining in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). The cell viability assay results exhibit that CDs slightly decrease the human mesenchymal stem cells viability at high dose. However, no remarkable changes were observed in cell viability. Furthermore, we assessed the CDs influence on nuclear morphology of hMSCs. These results clearly suggest that CDs treated cells have healthy and intact nuclei. Overall, our study results revealed that CDs have excellent compatibility on cells. Thus, the synthesized CDs can be used as versatile fluorescent probe for cellular imaging because of their excitation-dependent emission. Furthermore, we utilize the CDs as fluorescent probe for cellular imaging using confocal microscope, resulting tunable fluorescent emission. The CDs can enter the cells and accumulate in cytoplasmic region, symptomatic of congenial potential for multicolor imaging.

Fe3O4@Au/reduced graphene oxide nanostructures: Combinatorial effects of radiotherapy and photothermal therapy on oral squamous carcinoma KB cell line

Combination therapy including radiotherapy (RT) and photothermal therapy (PTT), as an alternative treatment for cancer treatment, recently has generated substantial interest. Graphene-based nanocarbons and gold content metallic nanoparticles, as one of the most attractive materials with their extraordinary physical and chemical properties, are extremely useful in this regard. We herein reported the effects of combination of cancer therapy including RT (doses of 2 and 4 Gy) and PTT (808 nm laser irradiation, NIR irradiation) as radio-photothermal therapy (RPTT) of KB oral squamous carcinoma cell line in the presence of Fe3O4@Au/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanostructures (NSs) at different concentrations. Fe3O4@Au/rGO NSs with different rGO contents have been synthesized by hydrothermal reaction method. They characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, EDS, FTIR and TGA. Cell viability for cytotoxicity, RT, PTT and RPTT were studied by MTT (3[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. High photothermal conversion efficiency of Fe3O4@Au/rGO NSs reaches to 61%. The resulting Fe3O4@Au NPs with approximate size of about 10-60 nm covered the rGO nanosheets with 40 wt% rGO at concentration of 20 mu g ml(-1), exhibited satisfactory cytotoxicity. They provided significant cell destruction under RT, PIT and specially RPTT in dose of 4 Gy. Furthermore, they have good biocompatibility on the healthy cells. Our results show that Fe3O4@Au/rGO NSs integrated with radiosensitization, photothermal therapy and their combination promising for nanomedicine and clinical applications.

Anomalous Fluctuation of Halogens in Relation to the Pollution Status along Lake Mariout, Egypt

This paper aimed to study the anomalous fluctuation of halogens with respect to the pollution status in surface water (w), pore water (p), and sediments (s) of Lake Mariout. It provided a framework for understanding the distribution of dissolved and precipitated halogen salts related to the pollution status of the lake. The study cleared out that bromide was only the most abundant halogen in the three studied partitions. On contrast, sediment’s partition contained the lowest chloride content. Fluoride minerals, especially, fluorapatites and carbonate-fluorapatite (FAP and CFAP), had high Saturation Index (SI) values in surface water (42.77-51.95 and 16.04-60.89, respectively) and in pore water (51.26-54.60 and 17.52-78.33, respectively). Bromide and chloride were mainly found in the soluble forms in the surface water and pore waters. Iodide salts, (Ca(IO3)(2) and Ca(IO3)(2).6H(2)O), were moderately precipitated in surface and pore waters. Thus, SI content reflected that halogens, especially fluoride and iodide, played a vital role in reducing lake pollution. Fluorite (CaF2) and sellaite (MgF2) could only be formed in pore water, while calcite and aragonite could be deposited from surface water. In addition, Cl was mainly found in the forms of NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2, and KCl in surface and pore waters. The multivariate analysis revealed that fluoride precipitate may serve in decreasing the dissolved salt pollution. Multivariate analysis showed that in the long run, the fluoride precipitation in FAP and CFAP can significantly adsorb and absorb various pollutants and can protect the lake from pollution. The ecological risk assessment conducted by calculating the enrichment factor (EF) showed that the lake was still unpolluted. Regarding human health risks, at appropriate levels of human health and safety, the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) of halogens found to be lower than these reported levels. Hence, ingestion and dermal absorption routes of halogens by surface water and sediments did not pose any adverse effects to population reflecting uncontaminated status of Lake Mariout.
