Tang, Min-Min;Kanagaraj, Kuppusamy;Rebek, Julius Jr.;Yu, Yang research published 《 Role of Rim Functions in Recognition and Selectivity of Small-Molecule Guests in Water-Soluble Cavitand Hosts》, the research content is summarized as follows. Groups on the upper rim of cavitands can play major roles in the recognition of small mols. Water-soluble deep cavitands 1, 2 or 3 bearing the walls upper rim of imidazole, urea, and Me urea, resp., were synthesized and characterized as hosts of small-mol. guests. The vase forms of 1 or 2 are stabilized through H-bonding to solvent water mols. between adjacent walls. Various small alkyl organic mols. – alcs., halides, cycloalkane derivatives and heterocycles – are efficiently bound in 1. For n-alcs. (C5 to C12), the -OH end is fixed at the upper rim and the alkyl parts are in the hydrophobic cavity. The longer alc. guests (C7-C12) show coiling. Cycloalkane guests rotate rapidly on all 3 axes within the host cavity, while heterocycles show orientations placing their heteroatoms near the cavitand rim. Competition studies between alkyl chlorides, bromides and iodides showed preference for binding of iodides in 1. Competition between cavitands for hexyl halide guests halide showed the order 2>1>3.

Teoh, Wei-Jing;Tun Nur Iskandar, Nur Amanina Juniasari;Yeap, Guan-Yeow;Kaneko, Kazuyoshi;Shimizu, Akio;Ito, Masato M. research published 《 Experimental and computational studies of laterally ethoxy Schiff base-ester liquid crystalline magnets》, the research content is summarized as follows. A series of liquid crystals 4-X-(3′-ethoxy-4′-alkyoxyphenyimino)anilines I (X = Me, MeO, Cl; n = 7, 8) with elongated mol. axis through the introduction of alkoxy chains containing different substituents was synthesized. The thermal-optical behaviors of these organic magnets were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. Elemental anal., FT-IR and 1H-NMR were employed to elucidate the mol. structures of the target compounds Exptl. data show that the nematic phase temperature range increases in the order of CH3 < Cl < OCH3. The laterally ethoxy Schiff base-ester liquid crystal with the most electroneg. Cl atom is presumed to outweigh both analogs containing CH3 and OCH3, leading to the highest clearing temperature (Tc) value, but the present work proved that the presence of the O atom from OCH3 is inclined to orientate in a parallel arrangement that increases the length-to-breadth ratio and the polarizability of the mol. Computational studies on the different substituents against its kinetic stability were carried out based on the variation in the energy value of HOMO-LUMO gap (ΔEgap). A relationship between the energy gap and the substituents under the present study shows that when the ΔEgap increases from OCH3 < Cl < CH3, the chem. reactivity decreases, leading to the lowering of the clearing temperature

Sydam, Rambabu;Ojha, Manoranjan;Deepa, Melepurath research published 《 Ionic additive in an ionogel for a large area long lived high contrast electrochromic device》, the research content is summarized as follows. Heptyl viologen (HV) based electrochromic devices (ECD) suffer from poor write-erase efficiencies and become permanently colored after a few redox switches, thus limiting their use as electrochromic windows or mirrors. This formidable issue is addressed by incorporating an ionic additive: a disodium salt of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), in the ionogel electrolyte. EDTA, via electrostatic interactions, binds to the HV+bul radical cation and prevents its’ further reduction to the undesirable pale colored neutral HV0, by wedging in-between the moieties and inhibiting their undesirable stacking. A large area HV/EDTA in gel/Prussian blue (PB) ECDs of ∼8 cm x 6 cm dimensions outperforms the HV/gel/PB ECD which is evidenced in the enhanced transmission modulation (ΔTmax: 73.1% at 606 nm), coloration efficiency (η: 346.2 cm2 C-1) and superior chromaticity coordinates (colored: L*,a,b: 40, 10, -65) compared to lower magnitudes of 69.2%, 270.3 cm2 C-1 and (L*,a,b: 50.3, 8, -48.5) resp. When evaluated as a mirror, HV/EDTA in gel/PB ECD shows a reflectance modulation of ∼65% which does not alter significantly, even at -10°C or at +60°C, ratifying its thermal robustness. The HV/EDTA in gel/PB ECD shows color and bleach times of 16 and 35 s, retains ∼93% of its’ initial contrast after 104 cycles and after aging for 2 years, continues to deliver a transmission modulation of 68%. This study successfully demonstrates a cost effective, easily implementable, scaled-up HV/EDTA in gel/PB based long-lived durable ECD for energy efficient smart window and rearview mirror applications.

Singh, Dhandeep;Singh, Nirmal research published 《 Synthesis and Evaluation of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole Derivatives: Dual Inhibitors of Carbonic Anhydrase II and Sodium Hydrogen Exchanger I》, the research content is summarized as follows. Ischemia reperfusion injury is responsible for impaired graft functioning in organ transplants, cerebral dysfunction, ischemic heart diseases, systemic inflammatory response syndrome, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and multiple organ dysfunction syndromes. Intracellular pH is critical for cell survival in ischemia reperfusion injury. Sodium hydrogen exchanger I and carbonic anhydrase II are critical in the regulation of intracellular pH. Inhibition of sodium hydrogen exchanger I and carbonic anhydrase II during reperfusion is found to ameliorate ischemia reperfusion injury sep. An attempt is made to synthesize dual inhibitors of sodium hydrogen exchanger and carbonic anhydrase to have better potential drug mol. in ischemia reperfusion injury treatment. The hydroxybenzotriazole is considered as a central pharmacophore for this dual activity and 12 derivatives are synthesized. All derivatives are tested for sodium hydrogen exchanger I and carbonic anhydrase II inhibitory activity. The tosylate derivative is found to be the most potent derivative with IC50 158.7 +/= 8.4μM for carbonic anhydrase II and 31.07 +/= 1.06μM for sodium hydrogen exchanger I. Although the potency is less than standard drugs but this is the first report of dual inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase II and sodium hydrogen exchanger.

Shangguan, Zhichun;Sun, Wenjin;Zhang, Zhao-Yang;Fang, Dong;Wang, Zhihang;Wu, Si;Deng, Chao;Huang, Xianhui; He, Yixin;Wang, Ruzhu;Li, Tingxian;Moth-Poulsen, Kasper;Li, Tao research published 《 A rechargeable molecular solar thermal system below 0 °C》, the research content is summarized as follows. An optimal temperature is crucial for a broad range of applications, from chem. transformations, electronics, and human comfort, to energy production and our whole planet. Photochem. mol. thermal energy storage systems coupled with phase change behavior (MOST-PCMs) offer unique opportunities to capture energy and regulate temperature Here, we demonstrate how a series of visible-light-responsive azopyrazoles couple MOST and PCMs to provide energy capture and release below 0 °C. The system is charged by blue light at -1 °C, and discharges energy in the form of heat under green light irradiation High energy d. (0.25 MJ kg-1) is realized through co-harvesting visible-light energy and thermal energy from the environment through phase transitions. Coatings on glass with photo-controlled transparency are prepared as a demonstration of thermal regulation. The temperature difference between the coatings and the ice cold surroundings is up to 22.7 °C during the discharging process. This study illustrates mol. design principles that pave the way for MOST-PCMs that can store natural sunlight energy and ambient heat over a wide temperature range.
