In a IL three-necked round-bottom flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer and a reflux condenser were introduced DMF (20OmL), l-bromo-3-tert-butylbenzene (54.3g, 0.25mol), crotyl alcohol (65mL, 0.76mol, 3eq), sodium carbonate (66.2g, 0.62mol, 2.5eq), tetrabutyl ammonium bromide (69.5g, 0.25mol, leq), palladium acetate (5.05g, 7.5mmol, 3molpercent) and tri-o-tolyl phosphine (7.6g, 25mmol, O.leq). After stirring for Ih at 90- 1000C, the reaction mixture was cooled toambient temperature. The reaction mixture was filtered over celite. The organic phase thus obtained was diluted with MTBE (50OmL) and washed three times with water (50OmL portions), dried over magnesium sulphate and concentrated. The resulting crude product was distilled with a bulb-to-bulb distillation (3mBar, 1210C) to give a colourless oil (34.7g, gc purity 73percent). The Grignard was transferred via a syringe into a cooled solution (-40° C.) of trimethyl borate dissolved in THF and added over a 10 minute period. The reaction mixture was warmed to room temperature overnight. Ethyl acetate and distilled water were added to the reaction mixture and the layers separated. The organics were washed with brine and dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was concentrated and the product purified by a silica gel column using 10percent ethyl acetate and hexanes as the eluants to give 3-t-butylphenyl boronic acid (4.0 g, 46percent yield) as a white solid. The product was confirmed by GCMS and was used directly in the next step.
