Electrospinning is gaining notoriety, once it enables to produce polymeric nanofibers with different additives and also the obtaining of small pore sizes and fiber diameters; desirable features for air filtration materials. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the filtration performance of cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers and cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) produced by electrospinning technique for retention of aerosol nanoparticles. The pressure drop and collection efficiency measurements of sodium chloride (NaCl) aerosol particles (diameters from 7 to 300 nm) were performed using Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS). The average diameter of the electrospun nanofibers used was 239 nm, ranging from 113 to 398 nm. Experimental results indicated that the nanofibers showed good permeability (10(-11) m(2)) and high-efficiency filtration for aerosol nanoparticles (about 100 %), which can include black carbon (BC) and the new coronavirus. The pressure drop was 1.8 kPa at 1.6 cm s(-1), which is similar to reported for some high-efficiency nanofiber filters. In addition, it also retains BC particles present in air, which was about 90 % for 375 nm and about 60 % for the 880 nm wavelength. Finally, this research provided information for future designs of indoor air filters and filter media for facial masks with renewable, non-toxic biodegradable, and potential antibacterial characteristics. Tumor microenvironment-responsive and oxygen self-sufficient oil droplet nanoparticles for enhanced photothermal/photodynamic combination therapy against hypoxic tumors

The combination of photothermal and photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT) shows pronounced potential as a prominent therapeutic strategy for tumor treatment. However, the efficacy is limited by insufficient tumortargeted delivery of PTT and PDT reagents and the hypoxic nature of the tumor microenvironment. To overcome these limitations, tumor acidity-responsive lipid membrane-enclosed perfluorooctyl bromide oil droplet nanoparticles (NPs) surface modified with N-acetyl histidine-modified D-a-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (PFOB@IMHNPs) were developed, capable of co-delivering oxygen, IR780 (a photothermal agent) and mTHPC (a photodynamic sensitizer) into tumors. Through self-sufficient oxygen transportation in combination with promotion of cellular uptake upon acid-triggered generation of surface positive charge, the PFOB@IMHNPs effectively delivered IR780 and mTHPC and produced singlet oxygen within hypoxic TRAMP-C1 cells following exposure to irradiation at 660 nm. This led to effective killing of hypoxic cancer cells in vitro. Importantly, when irradiation at 808 and 660 nm was carried out, PT/PD combination therapy utilizing PFOB@IMHNPs dramatically suppressed the growth of TRAMP-C1 tumors through effective tumor-targeted cargo delivery and relief of tumor hypoxia. Our results suggest the high potential of the PFOB@IMHNPs developed in this study in clinical application for cancer treatment.

In the present study, tryptanthrin, a phytochemical, has been identified as possessing strong anti-biofilm activity at sub MIC (2 mu g ml(-1)) against V. cholerae. LuxO was identified as the putative target of tryptanthrin by molecular docking and real time analysis. The phytochemical was identified as safe and possessed synergistic action with ciprofloxacin, a commonly used quinolone antibiotic to treat cholera. Collectively, the study establishes the first report on the anti-biofilm property of tryptanthrin by targeting LuxO, which could serve as a potential antivirulent therapy to combat V. cholerae infections.

Stabilization and Rheological Behavior of Fly Ash-Water Slurry Using a Natural Dispersant in Pipeline Transportation

Effective transportation of fly ash-water slurry through a pipeline from its generation site, a power plant, to a storage site by replacing commercial surfactants such as cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and sodium dodecyl sulfate by a natural dispersant extracted from Sapindus laurifolia was studied. The stability of fly ash slurry was determined from its rheological parameters, dispersant concentration, and stabilization mechanism. From surface tensiometric data, the critical micelle concentration of the dispersant was obtained to be 0.017 g/cc. The stabilization of high-concentration fly ash slurry has been studied through its rheological behavior by variation of temperature and dispersant and ash concentration. The rheological result obtained for fly ash concentrations in the range of 50-65% slurry was best justified by the Bingham plastic model. The wettability of fly ash particles is increased in the presence of dispersants, which is inferred from reduction of the surface tension value. The stabilization mechanism of the slurry is explained by a steric factor as indicated by the decrease in the zeta potential value. Air pollution is minimized at its destination site due to agglomeration of fly ash particles, which is confirmed from the SEM microphotograph.

Herein, we demonstrate an environmentally friendly non-solution route to fabricate high-quality CsPbBr3 films for carbon-based planar perovskite solar cells. By precisely tuning the thickness ratio of the evaporated CsBr to PbBr2 precursors (r), the dominant phase conversion of the cesium lead bromide perovskites from PbBr2-rich CsPb2Br5 (r <= 12:7) to CsPbBr3 (r = 12:8), and further to CsBr-rich Cs4PbBr6 (r >= 12:9) are achieved. The optimized CsPbBr3 perovskites are highly phase-pure and crystallized with ultra-high light absorption ability. The as-prepared CsPbBr3 films also exhibit a dense and uniform morphology with large grain sizes and monolayer-vertical aligned grains. The corresponding devices deliver a champion PCE of 7.58%, which is an excellent efficiency among carbon-based CsPbBr3 cells with evaporated CsPbBr3 light absorbers. The large-area (1 cm(2)) devices also achieve an efficiency of 6.21%. Moreover, the unencapsulated CsPbBr3 devices present superior moisture and thermal stabilities. Our work provides a facile approach to fabricate high-quality and large-area CsPbBr3 films for highly efficient solar cells, light-emitting diodes and photodetectors.

Spiking a Silty-Sand Reference Soil with Bacterial DNA: Limits and Pitfalls in the Discrimination of Live and Dead Cells When Applying Ethidium Monoazide (EMA) Treatment

In the present study, EMA (ethidium monoazide) treatment was applied to a silty-sand reference soil prior to DNA extraction to enable a differentiation between dead and living cells. For this purpose, a reference soil was spiked with Listeria monocytogenes cells or cell equivalents, respectively. With the purpose of evaluating optimum treatment conditions, different EMA concentrations have been tested. However, the results remained largely inconclusive. Furthermore, varied dark incubation periods allowing EMA to penetrate dead cells did not allow the selective removal of DNA from membrane-compromised cells in downstream analyses. In contrast to undiluted soil, an effect of EMA treatment during DNA extraction could be observed when using a 1:10 dilution of the reference soil; however, the effect has not been sufficiently selective to act on heat-treated cells only. Although the application of EMA to soil requires further evaluation, the procedure harbors future potential for improving DNA-based approaches in microbial ecology studies.

Pest control with drip-applied dimethyl disulfide and chloropicrin in plastic-mulched tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

BACKGROUND Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) is used as a preplant soil fumigant for weed and soilborne pathogen control in plasticulture vegetable crops. The objective of this research was to determine the control efficacy of emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation of DMDS or DMDS + chloropicrin (Pic) on weed and Fusarium wilt in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plasticulture. RESULTS The effective DMDS rates required to provide 50% (ER50) control of purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) were 210 and 340 kg ha(-1) at 4 weeks after fumigation (WAF) in fall 2017 and fall 2018, respectively, while these values increased to 348 and >467 kg ha(-1), respectively, at 12 WAF. The ER50 values of DMDS + Pic were 150 and 240 kg ha(-1) at 4 WAF in fall 2017 and fall 2018, respectively, while these values increased to 255 and 450 kg ha(-1), respectively, at 12 WAF. DMDS + Pic was generally more effective than DMDS for C. rotundus control. The high rates of DMDS or DMDS + Pic provided adequate C. rotundus control in early season but failed to provide effective control by season end. In addition, DMDS + Pic injections through drip tape effectively reduced Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) inoculum while DMDS alone was generally ineffective. CONCLUSION Injection of the EC formulation of DMDS or DMDS + Pic through drip tape should have been provided a viable option for C. rotundus and Fusarium wilt control in plastic-mulched tomato. However, supplemental weed management actions, such as herbicide applications, may be required to achieve season-long control. (c) 2019 Society of Chemical Industry
