Preparation of gamma-Al2O3 membranes for ultrafiltration by reverse micelles-mediated sol-gel process

Sol-gel process was modified by reverse micelles (RMs) for the preparation of gamma-Al2O3 ultrafiltration (UF) membranes and their applications in the efficient rejection of methyl blue and bovine serum albumin were explored. The optimized boehmite sol with a narrower particle size distribution and better sphericity was synthesized by using cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide RMs as microreactors and was dip-coated on alpha-Al2O3 microfiltration substrates to prepare gamma-Al2O3 UF membranes. It was found that not only the sol particle size, it’s distribution and morphology had also an important effect on the pore size, pore size distribution, porosity and pore volume of the membrane. Additionally, the as-prepared membranes with a MWCO of 8 kDa exhibited a narrow pore size distribution (4.8-6.8 nm), relatively high pure-water flux (30.4 L/(h m(2) bar)) and excellent rejection for bovine serum albumin and methyl blue with the maximum rejection rate of 96.2% and 96.8% respectively.

Ivermectin induces autophagy-mediated cell death through the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway in glioma cells

Glioma is one of the most common types of primary brain tumors. Ivermectin (IVM), a broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug, has been identified as a novel anticancer agent due to its inhibitory effects on the proliferation of glioma cells in vitro and in vivo. However, the ability of IVM to induce autophagy and its role in glioma cell death remains unclear. The main objective of the present study was to explore autophagy induced by IVM in glioma U251 and C6 cells, and the deep underlying molecular mechanisms. In addition, we examined the effects of autophagy on apoptosis in glioma cells. In the present study, transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM), immunofluorescence, Western blot and immunohistochemistry were used to evaluate autophagy activated by IVM. Cell viability was measured by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and colony formation assay. The apoptosis rate was detected by flow cytometry and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL). Meanwhile, autophagy inhibition was achieved by using chloroquine (CQ). U251-derived xenografts were established for examination of IVM-induced autophagy on glioma in vivo. Taken together, the results of the present study showed that autophagy induced by IVM has a protective effect on cell apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, IVM induced autophagy through AKT/mTOR signaling and induced energy impairment. Our findings show that IVM is a promising anticancer agent and may be a potential effective treatment for glioma cancers.

Aggregation behavior of anionic bio-surfactant; sodium deoxycholate (SDC) and cationic surfactant; cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and their mixtures at different mole fractions, alpha(SDC) = (0.90026, 0.88416, and 0.69438) has been examined in water as well as in aqueous solutions of nicotinic acid at (298.15, 308.15, and 318.15) K by employing various techniques such as conductivity, density, sound velocity, UV-visible spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies. From the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the degree of ionization (alpha) of micelle, thermodynamic parameters {standard Gibbs free energy (), enthalpy (), and entropy () of micellization} have been evaluated and analyzed for surfactants studied in water and in (1, 2, and 3) x 10(-4) mol kg(-1) nicotinic acid((aq)) solutions at (298.15, 308.15, and 318.15) K. The CMC values for both the pure and mixed (SDC + CTAB) surfactants were found to increase with increase in concentration of nicotinic acid. The partial specific volume (phi(v)), isentropic compressibility (kappa(s)), and partial specific isentropic compressibility (phi(kappa)) were estimated from density and speed of sound data. UV-vis absorption spectra of 1 x 10(-4) mol kg(-1) nicotinic acid((aq)) solutions were also recorded in presence of surfactants studied at alpha(SDC) = (0.90026, 0.88416, 0.69438) and T = 298.15 K. Hydrodynamic diameters (D-h) of micellar aggregates for both pure and mixed surfactants were analyzed through the DLS studies performed at 298.15 K. The results from all the studies suggest the supremacy of both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between the nicotinic acid and the mixed micellar aggregates. [GRAPHICS] .

Preparation and characterization of 58S bioactive glass based scaffold with Kaempferol-containing Zein coating for bone tissue engineering

The aim of this study was to prepare a porous scaffold out of 58S bioactive glass as the bare and coated with Zein to improve mechanical properties and acting as a carrier for Kaempferol controlled delivery. Overall, this study showed that the Zein-coated scaffold possesses superior properties rather than bare scaffold, and the scaffolds coated with 7wt/v % Zein solution could be considered as appropriate scaffolds for bone regeneration.

Morphology Control of Liposome – RAFT Oligomer Precursors to Complex Polymer Nanostructures

Different types of butyl acrylate (BA)-co-acrylic acid (AA) oligomers were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and mixed with extruded 200 nm dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide vesicles. Evaluation and conceptual design of triphenylphosphonium bromide-based deep eutectic solvent as novel thermal nanofluid for concentrated solar power

In a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant, an increase of heat transfer effect of the working fluid is a key deliverable which is usually obtained by enhancing its thermo-physical properties. The current work reports the synthesis of heat transfer fluids (HTF) based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) consisting of a hydrogen bond donor (HBD), namely, triphenylphosphonium bromide, and a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), namely, ethylene glycol. Initially, the thermophysical properties, namely, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity (TC) and specific heat capacity were measured and compared with the conventional solvents. The properties were further enhanced by the dispersion of spherical Al2O3 nanoparticles in DESs. The alumina nanoparticles were found to have a negligible effect on the physical properties (density and viscosity) of the base fluid, thereby limiting the pressure drop and also the coefficient of friction. For their potential application as thermal fluids for CSP plants, the thermal properties of DESs and nanoparticle dispersed deep eutectic solvents (NDDESs) were measured within a temperature range of 25-60 degrees C. The TC of 1 wt% Al2O3 with the base fluid was around eight times higher than the base DES. It was found that the TCs of DES and NDDES were higher when compared to the commercial HTF, namely, Therminol VP-1. Eventually, the Aspen plus flowsheet was conceptualized to ascertain the steam generation rate and the overall heat transfer coefficient of these novel solvents. A combination of U-shaped for latent heat and shell and tube heat for sensible heat was employed in the flowsheet. The CSP scheme gave a steam generation rate of 1.7 kg h(-1) at 180 degrees C with a corresponding DES flow rate of 1 m(3) h(-1).

Preparation and properties of polyisobutene/organic montmorillonite hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesive (HMPSA)

To enhance the interfacial adhesion between Na-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) and polyisobutene (PIB) matrix, it is necessary to modify Na-MMT in organic way. Organic montmorillonite (OMMT) was successfully modified by Na-MMT with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) intercalation reagent. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) result showed that the d-spacing of Na-MMT was increased from 1.424 to 2.480 nm after organic modification. PIB/OMMT hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesive (HMPSA) samples were prepared by melt-intercalation process. The amount of OMMT was optimized according to the system stability and adhesion performance. The effects of OMMT content on rheological, adhesion and thermal properties of PIB HMPSA were investigated. Adhesion performance and system stability of PIB HMPSA were greatly improved by adding moderate amounts of OMMT. In addition, the sample containing 1 wt% OMMT exhibited optimal adhesion property and excellent stability, meanwhile, its 180 degrees peel strength was 1.19 times greater than pristine sample.

The exposed crystal planes of (200) and (111), corresponding to the d-spacing of 0.27 and 0.31 nm, were confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The fundamental characteristics of CeO2-0.135 led to the highest surface area, surface area normalized reducibility and oxidized gold species (Aun+/Au-0) on the surface, relatively higher oxygen vacancies and a smaller average gold particle size (7.9 nm). The activity results show that the Au/CeO2-0.135 has the highest methanol conversion and H-2 production rate for oxidative steam reforming of methanol (OSRM).
