To a solution of 42 mL of 6N HCI and 63 mL of water, 5-bromo-N1-methylbenzene- 1 ,2-diamine (9.1 g, 45.4 mmol) and glycolic acid (17.2 g, 227.2 mmol) was added sequentially.
