Using Hunsdiecker’s procedure (C.A. 37, 37344) I is converted into BrCH2CHMeCO2Me, [α]24D 13.8°, which on hydrolysis with HBr in glacial AcOH gives BrCH2CHMeCO2H, [α]27D 10.1° (c 14.4, CHCl3).
