p-Tolylsulfonylhydrazones are decomposed by alkali or alkoxide to p-toluenesulfinate and either olefin or aryldiazomethanes. The necessary hydrazones were prepared by refluxing p-MeC6H4SO2NHNH2 10 min. with the carbonyl compound in alc. Unless otherwise stated, in the following decompositions the reagent is Na in (CH2OH)2 (0.7-1.5N).
