The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and slowly poured into ice cold water (30 mL). The precipitated product was collected by filtration under vacuum to obtain the crude product. The product was recrystallized from hot methanol, filtered under vacuum and dried to obtain 1 , 4-bis (6-bromo-1 -methyl-1 H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) benzene. 1 H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) d: 8.08 (s, 4H), 7.98 (s, 2H), 7.68 (d, J = 8.4 Hz, 2H), 7.41 (d, J = 8.4 Hz, 2H), 3.96 (s, 6H); MS (ESI + APCI): m/z = 497 [M + H]+.
