To a solution of 5.0 g of 2-bromo-5-methylaniline in 17 ml of hydrochloric acid (37%) was added dropwise, at 0 C. within 30 minutes, a solution of 1.9 g of sodium nitrite in 9.6 ml of water. The filtrate was acidified with 4.0M hydrochloric acid in 1,4-dioxane solution and the resulting precipitate was then filtered off and dried.
