The reaction mixture was stirred overnight at 85 C. in an oil bath and then quenched by the addition of 100 mL of water, then cooled to room temperature. The resulting mixture was extracted with 3*100 mL of ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under vacuum. The residue was applied onto a silica gel column and eluted with petroleum ether (100%) to yield of methyl 4-(4-methylpentyl)benzoate as colorless oil.
