Then the crude product andsodium acetate (0.33 g, 4 mmol) were added to a solution of benzil (0.42 g, 2 mmol) in anhydrousethanol (30 mL) under a nitrogen atmosphere. The mixture was refluxed for 24 h. After cooling to RT,the solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by silica gel columnchromatography (eluent: n-hexane:CH2Cl2 = 4:1) to give a pale yellow solid (yield 72.0%, 0.75 g).1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3,delta ): 7.91(s, 2H), 7.65-7.66(m, 4H), 7.34-7.41(m, 6H). 13C-NMR (100 MHz,CDCl3,delta ): 154.15, 139.36, 137.95, 133.10, 130.26, 129.59, 128.38, 123.74.
