General procedure: Typical procedure for the preparation of dimethyl (2-oxo-2-phenylethyl)phosphonate (5a). To a solution of methanol (10 mL), styrene (0.11 g, 1.0 mmol) and dimethylphosphite (0.22 g, 2.0 mmol) was added Mn(OAc)3 (0.54 g, 2.0 mmol) over 30 min at 70 C, and the mixture was stirred for another 30 min to complete the reaction. The combined organic fractions were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, and concentrated under vacuum to yield the crude product, which was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, petroleum ether/EtOAc/CH2Cl2(10:1:1)) to give pure dimethyl (2-oxo-2-phenylethyl)phosphonate (5a).
