The crude material was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: 15-55percent EtOAc/hexanes) to afford ketone U (2.15 g, 6.24 mmol, 77.9percent). 1H NMR (200 MHz, CDCI3): delta 8.61 (d, J= 1.6 Hz, 1H), 7.96 (dd, J= 8.0, 1.6 Hz, 1H), 7.67-7.62 (m, 1H), 7.48 (d, J= 8.0 Hz, 1H), 6.98-6.67 (m, 2H), 1.98 (d, J F,H = 24.0 Hz, 3H).
